Gutters 101: Frequently Asked Questions
At CKC HomeWorks, we know homeowners have plenty of questions about spouting. To help, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions we hear from customers across eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned?
Without gutter covers, we recommend cleaning at least twice a year, once in spring and once in fall. Homes surrounded by trees may need more frequent cleaning. Installing a gutter protection system reduces or eliminates the need for cleaning.
What Are Seamless Gutters?
Seamless gutters are made from one continuous piece of material, custom-cut on-site. Unlike sectional gutters, they have no seams along the length, which greatly reduces leaks and maintenance. The only seams are the end caps and miters.
How Long Do Gutters Last?
With proper care, aluminum gutters can last 25–30 years, while copper gutters may last 50 to 100 years or more. Regular inspections and maintenance help maximize lifespan.
Do I Really Need Gutters?
Yes. Gutters protect your foundation, siding, roof, and landscaping by channeling water away from your home. Without them, you risk costly water damage. In our area, gutters are the most common method for roof water drainage control. The other method for controlling the roof water drainage is to install a drainage system around the structure that is specifically designed to deal with roof runoff.
What Size Gutters Do I Need?
Most homes use 6-inch K-style gutters, but some larger homes or commercial buildings may require 7-inch or box-style gutters for added capacity. Our team can recommend the right size after an inspection.
Can Gutters Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?
In many cases, yes. If damage is limited to a few sections, we can reseal joints, reattach hangers, or replace parts. For older systems with widespread problems, replacement may be the better option.
